Quick Kitty Guide

Classy Coons Quick Kitty Guide will help you to prepare for your new furry baby’s adjustment into his new home.

Carrier

We will provide carrier for transporting your kitten home.

Food

Your kitten will be introduced to Purina Kitten Formulas as first solid food.  We free feed all our cats and kittens here at Classy Coons.   Most do well on the kibble so this will be on individual basis.  We do NOT use wet (canned) food here as a staple.  If you plan to change kibble to something other than Purina One Kitten, we request that you wait at least two weeks before switching.   When you do switch  we ask that the Purina is mixed in with the new food to hopefully prevent upsetting his tummy with the change.    We cannot stress enough the importance to keep your kitten on same food for at least two weeks of arriving in your home.

We have found it necessary to add a clause to our contract voiding health guarantee if food is changed and diarrhea occurs.   Food change can cause vomiting and diarrhea and dehydration of a young kitten.   This has been our number one issue with new kittens going home resulting in sick kitten that in some cases has taken months to resolve (irritable bowel) and multiple vet visits.   PLEASE follow our instructions to only change food after two weeks and then only by mixing in new food little each day.

Water

Maine Coons love water and it’s important to have fresh clean water available for them, preferably a filtered fountain.  Eventually you may want to invest in one of these for your kitten.  Amazon has the Drinkwell Stainless 360 at half price much of the time.  There is a smaller ceramic PetSafe Drinkwell Pagoda fountain that we use here at Classy Coons, also.    But any filtered fountain will be great for your kitten.   You will not need the fountain until they are around 4 months old or more.

Litter

We use  Purina Tidy Cats Litter We recommend using the same litter your kitten is accustomed to when you bring him home. There will be so much to learn and explore when your kitten comes home so having the same litter and food that is familiar will help him to not have an unwanted ‘accident’.

Scratching Pose

Eventually your Maine Coon will grow big and tall and will turn over most upright scratching post.   We have found this one works great here.  https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000634MH8?ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details&th=1

Safety

It is recommended to confine your kitten to a room for the first few days until he gets accustomed to your voice and sounds in your home before introducing to your entire house.  If there are other animals it will allow them to be introduced with security of a door between them.

Remember your kitten will chew on wires so be sure those are out of reach.  We wrap our cords with wire loom found at Home Depot.  It may have other names but its inexpensive way to protect your wires from your little teething baby.   It is highly recommended that kittens are not allowed to bite fingers when playing as it may seem cute now but when adults even when playing can be a bad habit and cause harm.

Grooming

Weekly use a ‘deshedding tool’ for cats will greatly reduce matts.   Your cat will grow to love the attention as well.   My groomer recommends a stainless steel comb over a brush which I’ve found to work well here.    Both of these would be a good grooming investment!   Maine Coon Tail will pop out around 6 months…. wait for it!

Eye Color

Kittens are born with blue eyes that change between 6-8 weeks

Insurance

Your kitten comes with 30 days of free Pet Insurance with Trupanion if you activate within 24 hours of receiving your kitten.  There is no obligation for you to keep this insurance after these first 30 days.   You will find this certificate in your kitten packet.  You MUST call within 24 hours of receiving your kitten.

Health Check

We take the kittens to our veterinarian (Lavonia Animal Hospital – 706-356-8116) at 8 weeks old for a health exam.  Normally vaccinations are given that day also.

If you have any questions during this transition period please do not hesitate to call or text me at        706-491-3155 or email me at terry@classycoons.com.
